In digital health, the first obstacle is rarely the one founders expect. It\u2019s not the market. It\u2019s not even funding. It\u2019s proving, early and credibly, that an idea will work in clinical reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat first barrier is validation,\u201d says Anja Bare\u0161i\u0107<\/strong>, coordinator of AI4HEALTH.CRO<\/strong> (EDIH) and Head of the Laboratory for Computational Biology and Translational Medicine at the Ru\u0111er Bo\u0161kovi\u0107 Institute. A strong pitch, she adds, is not the same as a product ready for hospitals.<\/p>\n

That is precisely the gap AI4HEALTH.CRO was designed to close, giving health innovators access to structured \u201ctest before invest\u201d support, often expensive, fragmented, or simply unavailable in healthcare, so they can de-risk development before scaling. <\/p>\n

The user: a Rijeka startup rethinking radiology workflows<\/h3>\n

One of AI4HEALTH.CRO\u2019s users, Medusa Technologies<\/strong>, is a Rijeka-based startup founded in 2024<\/strong> by Diego Ivanovi\u0107<\/strong> and Leonard Martinis<\/strong>. Their mission is ambitious but practical: to reduce friction and error risk in radiology by tackling a problem clinicians experience every day \u2014 software fragmentation. <\/p>\n

\u201cRadiologists have to jump between multiple programs,\u201d Ivanovi\u0107 explains, describing diagnostic workflows built on disconnected systems. That constant switching slows work and increases the risk of mistakes\u2014while also contributing to burnout pressure across the profession.<\/p>\n

Medusa\u2019s answer is not \u201canother tool.\u201d The team is developing an operating system for radiology<\/strong> that consolidates applications and software tools radiologists currently use separately, aiming to modernise the infrastructure rather than add another standalone layer.<\/p>\n

The bottleneck: clinical validation and access to real data<\/h3>\n

For AI startups in healthcare, the hardest step often comes long before pilots or procurement: access to authentic clinical data<\/strong> and credible validation conditions.<\/p>\n

Through AI4HEALTH.CRO\u2019s Test Before Invest<\/strong> services, Medusa gained access to anonymised radiology data from a clinical environment<\/strong>, enabling the team to train AI models on real X-ray images<\/strong> while adhering to GDPR requirements<\/strong>. For many early-stage teams, this is the difference between theoretical performance and clinically relevant development. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn normal circumstances, access to real clinical data is extremely complicated and almost unavailable to young startups,\u201d Ivanovi\u0107 says. \u201cThrough AI4HEALTH.CRO, we could train our models on authentic X-ray images.\u201d <\/p>\n
